With infinite complacency…

Tonight we had a film evening and were probably the first people to use the new “multimedia room” for its true purpose. Tim brought along a wide selection of films and we voted to determine which we should watch – and “The War of the Worlds” was the winner by one vote.

Once we’d fended of our fellow building dwellers (grr!) and the film had ended, we engaged in some Theological Reflection on the film (although people probably didn’t realise it at the time!). We discussed how parts of the film mirrored events/themes from the Bible and our Christian faith. There were some obvious and subtle references throughout which we talked through briefly. One of the more obvious, was found in the final line from the Narrator:

“From the moment the invaders arrived, breathed our air, ate, and drank, they were doomed. They were undone, destroyed, after all of man’s weapons and devices had failed, by the tiniest creatures that God in his wisdom put upon this earth. By the toll of a billion deaths, man had earned his immunity, his right to survive among this planet’s infinite organisms. And that right is ours against all challenges. For neither do men live nor die in vain.”

Confirming the idea of an infinitely wise, all-knowing, God, who’s Creation is far beyond our understanding.

One critic wrote:

“The one thing the film does quite well is subtly underscore something that is quite obvious to those who study the Bible. When you have an enemy who is not of this world, that’s where you have to look for your deliverance.”

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” Ephesians 6:12-13 – TNIV
